Everyone talks about finding your niche and putting your efforts there to be successful. Unfortunately finding the profitable niche and your position in it is not always easy. Making a mistake here can really cost you a lot of time, effort and money. I know I’ve been there, done that and even have the t-shirt and coffee mug.

My name is Mike Paetzold and I have been marketing in various niche markets for a couple years. The initial foray into a niche though was done totally wrong. Here is what happened and how you don’t want to do it.

My initial entry was into the golf niche. Now I love to chase the little white ball around and through the trees. Not quite sure what I do could be called golf but there are lots of people like me. I created a book just for beginner golfers like myself.

I spent weeks writing and researching a book with everything that I thought the beginner golfer would need to know. I spent a couple hundred dollars on a site design and creating a sales letter, then more money on generating traffic to it. Now the very first time I tried my hand at niche marketing it cost me over $300 in cash and 6 weeks of my time. At that point I was working part time so that was probably in the area of 100 hours. At even $5 an hour I had invested at least $800 into this project with a total return of $0.
